An iconic new building designed to facilitate collaboration and promote future growth at this tier one research university
The Physics department at The University of Texas at Dallas had been spread out across campus, with some professors having labs in multiple buildings to accommodate their research needs. The client desired a modern building with science on display to house the department along with all their teaching labs, research labs, research graduate assistants, offices, and spaces for collaboration.
The primary challenge of this project was to plan and design a research and teaching facility that strikes a balance in being flexible and interdisciplinary while using space efficiently. Our design approach addressed these challenges by identifying and interpreting future needs during programming, where we worked interactively with the stakeholders during multi-day discovery workshops. By asking the right questions followed by tours and small break-out sessions during programming and early design, the process proved effective in identifying needs, building consensus, and providing a strong design.
This LEED Gold building will accommodate growth for 1,750 additional students, 50 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 20 senior lecturers, and additional research funding of USD$7.5 million per year.
