Terminal demolition sheds light on Phoenix’s vibrant history with public art

Built in 1962, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) Terminal 2 (T2) had surpassed its expected operating life and was no longer meeting modern needs. As a symbol of Phoenix’s growth and change, as well as commitment to history and culture, we embarked on terminal demolition, apron reconstruction, and mural relocation to help with PHX’s evolution.

We provided professional services to take T2 offline including site civil and utility engineering to disconnect the building from active airport utilities, demolition coordination, and adjacent apron reconstruction. Our services also included retrofitting the Rental Car Center escalator hall to house “The Phoenix,” T2’s iconic Paul Coze mural and the City’s first piece of art commissioned through a public process. Planning for the future was key for this project as we not only accommodated the mural structurally but helped create a public art experience. Finally, during construction, we provided oversight and enhanced airport sustainability by adding Level 1 electric vehicle chargers to the T2 employee parking lot.

The enhancements to the airfield and opportunity to celebrate Phoenix's public art history stand as a point of pride for the airport.

Meet Our Team

Mark Koester, US West Airport Infrastructure Lead

You won’t even know we’re there. When travelers aren't affected by the work we’re doing at an airport—that’s what I consider a success.

Rich Zych, Senior Associate, Transportation

Whether designing a runway or leading a construction administration team for an apron expansion, collaboration with the airport from start to finish is key.

Barb Berastegui, Principal, Buildings

Each project is so unique, I try to create spaces that tell a story about the ‘place’ developed from the goals of the client and the specificity of the site.

David Takeuchi, Associate, Architecture

I enjoy designing within existing structures, celebrating the poetics, history, and the realities often found within those spaces.
