Saving the Atlanta community more than $650 million

The wastewater system in the City of Atlanta consists of roughly 2,200 miles of sewers, three water reclamation facilities, and 14 pump stations. The City was challenged by aging infrastructure and needed significant improvements to address water quality concerns and sustain a growing population. Enter the $3.9B Clean Water Atlanta Program, one of the largest wet weather control efforts in the United States.

This comprehensive, long-term plan ensures residents will have access to a resilient and sustainable drinking water supply, as well as clean streams and rivers. It will reduce flooding and pollution caused by stormwater, monitor water quality, eliminate sanitary sewer spills, and implement a combined sewer overflow reduction plan.

Co-located with City staff in a dedicated program office, we provide management consulting, regulatory compliance, planning, operations, engineering, and construction administration support services. Public acceptance and limited financial impact on the community are critical to program success. At the onset of the program, we used a risk-based assessment approach to asset management. This allowed the City to evaluate, rank, and implement projects based on risk and hold discussions with the regulating body regarding revised project goals. This prioritization saved the City considerable money by focusing efforts on high risk projects and deprioritizing other projects that could be dealt with as part of a long-term maintenance plan.

Throughout the past 12 years, we’ve helped save the City of Atlanta more than $650M. How? By using cost saving innovations to automate the design process, instituting a rapid-response capacity certification program, and initiating a proactive utility coordination process to reduce construction durations and impacts on citizens.
