Working to clean up and restore a 150 acre zinc-copper mine
The Callahan Mine is a former 150-acre zinc-copper massive sulfide mine adjacent to and under a tidal estuary on the Atlantic coast. The mine ceased operation in 1972, and the site is currently under water and subject to daily tidal exchange. Sadly, mine wastes from this former open-pit mine contaminated community groundwater wells and adjacent terrestrial, freshwater and intertidal and sub tidal marine habitats. As a result of the contamination the site was named to the U.S. EPA National Priorities List in 2002.
To understand the extent of the damage and to chart a way forward, Stantec completed a remedial investigation and ecological risk assessment for the Callahan Mine. An Administrative Order of Consent among the EPA, Maine DEP, and Maine DOT was finalized in 2005.
In 2012, the Maine DEP approached us to continue to provide services to help reclaim and restore this landscape. Our work on the clean-up action and site restoration includes supplemental ecological surveys and permitting for site closure, ecological restoration, and design support for a treatment wetland that will treat groundwater as the waste rock and tailings piles are dewatered.
