Waterfront event destination matchless in design aesthetics and coastal resilience
To make Fort Lauderdale a more attractive destination for conventions and events in North America, the Broward County Convention Center embarked on a significant expansion and renovation project. The renovation features new indoor/outdoor event space, a hotel conveniently on property offering great views of the Intercoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, and an office building with over 26,000 square feet of space.
As part of the expansion, embracing the location directly on the waterfront was vital. However, given the potential for significant storm surge and wave impact in the area, we were brought in to conduct essential wave analysis that would assess conditions at the site and support a design to withstand a 100-year storm event. We performed wave modeling then analyzed the data to determine the design criteria and a multi-tiered strategy for wave prevention at the seaward edge of both the convention center expansion and the plaza areas on property.
With our modeling, analysis, and design innovations, the Broward County Convention Center is set to withstand the impact of future storms as it continues to create more jobs, increase tourism, and attract more business to Greater Fort Lauderdale.
